Description: The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP)-St. Louis City Branch will host its FirstYouth Symposium called “Let’s Be Heard” at Missouri Black Expo 2011.

In recent months, St. Louis has seen its share of youth violence, from high profile incidents like the shooting death of Tyrone Thompson, a former Pagedale police chief and fierce advocate for non-violence, to cases that go unnoticed by the media and the public, but impact so many families. The NAACP wants to find solutions by engaging youth in a two-way dialogue.

The “Let’s be Heard”Symposium will give youth a chance to sound off and really be heard on issues affecting them that could be catalysts for violent behavior. A panel of health professionals, community leaders, educators and other youth workers will conduct a series of stimulating workshops and town hall meetings to promote discussions on the causes of youth violence. Among those participating are St. Louis Police Chief Dan Isom, Alderwoman Kacie Starr Triplett, State Representatives Tishura Jones & Chris Carter and rap artist and Tony J. After the Symposium, selected youth participants will present their report of solutions and recommendations to the panel of experts who will then work together to develop effective long-term strategies and tools to curb youth violence.

***After the Symposium, a slew of musicians and recording artists will take the MBE Music Fest stage for a special concert against violence at 5:30pm
